Miami Heat vs Los Angeles Lakers Preview

After a crazy 2019-20 season, we have reached the finish line. Miami will take on the Los Angeles Lakers in an exciting seven-game series. The Lakers have blown through the Western Conference, while Miami has taken down both Milwaukee and Boston to get here. These two teams are built very differently as the Lakers have the best duo in the league with LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Their depth can be very hit or miss, while Miami’s has been an asset. Jimmy Butler was rather quiet in the Eastern Conference Finals but didn’t need to do much with Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro having big games. These teams may have had a major difference in record, but the Heat and Lakers were very close in a lot of key stats throughout the season and playoffs.

Heat Analysis
miami heatComparing the two teams this season there are a few areas where the Heat has had an advantage. This team does not turn the ball over and that was a crucial aspect to the Heat winning in the Boston series. They ranked 15th in the regular season and the Lakers ranked 26th. Both teams move the ball around quite well, as the Heat ranked 5th in assists and scored 112 points per game. The Lakers were at just 113. Now we will see quite the difference in three-point shooting in this one. Miami is full of shooters and was a top-five three-point shooting team throughout the regular season. Miami was 45-8 this season against teams with a lower three-point percentage.

Throughout the regular season, it was Jimmy Butler who led the way with 20.1 points per game. However, everything was very balanced after that. Goran Dragic had 17 points per game, while Adebayo had 16.4. Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson both averaged 13 points. If Andre Iguodala comes alive like he did last game then we start to see him and Jae Crowder sneak in the picture of being key guys to slow down the Lakers. It will be interesting to see who is tasked with the job of being the defensive veteran compared to another offensive shooter.

Lakers Analysis
Los Angeles Lakers The Lakers have a few key areas where they can keep the Heat from pulling off an upset here. On the glass is one of them. Miami is a good rebounding team, but the Lakers second chance points come off offensive boards. They averaged 10.6 per game during the regular season and we have seen that come into play at times during the playoffs. Los Angeles also likes to get steals to where they can run in transition a bit, which is the only time they really push the pace. One of the key areas will be defending the three-point line this series for the Lakers. They were able to keep Miami at bay in the prior two matchups but that was a long time ago.

One of the questions always asked is who will step up other than LeBron and Davis. Both scored over 25 points per game this season while Kyle Kuzma has been their next best scorer with 12.4. However, Kuzma has been a liability in the postseason and doesn’t match up well with the Heat. He will still need to play decent minutes, but the lakers will need to get a lot out of Rajon Rondo, Dwight Howard, Danny Green, and KCP.

jimmy butlerWhen you look at the matchups for this one there isn’t anything that stands out. The Lakers and Heat all allowed under the league average for fantasy points at each position. In Game 1 we should see a lot of defensive matchups change around throughout, so it is hard to say who will be guarding who in the meantime. The most interesting matchup though is Bam Adebayo against the Lakers bigs. He was able to have his way in the Boston series, but I am a bit more concerned for him in this matchup. If James isn’t going to hunt Jimmy Butler, I give him the edge over KCP and Danny Green right now. Miami will try to throw multiple guys at LeBron but I am not sure that matters all that much.

The Heat can have some spread out scoring but Tyler Herro, Jimmy Butler, and Goran Dragic are the three I like the most. If they do well, the Heat does well, which is what I am expecting tonight. As for the Lakers, this feels like a series where Rajon Rondo can get going. Davis and James continue to be the usual suspects night in and night out. Dwight Howard is also going to be a volatile option if he can produce as he did in Game 5 against the Nuggets.
